AR Runner

My experience with the AR Runner app was not what one would call easy. When I first tried to download the app, there was a message that read, "This app requires specific features not available on this device." I then tried to download it on my iPad and got the same message. The next step was to try it on an iPad from my classroom. That didn't work either. My next thought was to try my husband's phone. He has a Windows phone. I then learned that it is only available for iPhone 6s or later versions as well as iPad Pro or iPad (2017). I have an iPhone 6. After trying other AR apps with no success, I deduced that the iPhone 6 does not have the capabilities to run most of the AR apps. I finally asked a friend if I could use her iPhone 8 and pay her the fee required to download the app. She graciously agreed.

AR Runner is an augmented reality app in which one uses a mobile device to run through checkpoints. The game is timed and keeps track of records and the user's best times. The game can be played individually, with a friend or group on the same device, or against other players from anywhere in the world. There are 3 field sizes to choose from, 2x2 meters, 4x4 meters, or 8x8 meters. A larger field can be added by purchasing an upgrade to the game. There are also 4 field shapes to choose from. The purchase of the game offers 2 game modes, normal and wall punch. For an additional fee, 2 other modes are available. One mode is 30 Second Rush. In it, users activate the most number of spots in 30 seconds. The other mode is Enemies. In this mode, the user must activate the most number of spots while avoiding the blocks.

I tried the Normal mode as well as the Wall Punch mode. In the Normal mode, I tried several of the field shapes as an individual and as a challenge with another player. My results are shown in the images below.

In the challenge, we had to complete all of the checkpoints. The person who completed them the fastest was the winner. Player 1 (myself) completed the checkpoints in 8.53 seconds. Player 2 completed the checkpoints in 8.08 seconds. In the individual game, I was able to complete the checkpoints in 5.77 seconds. In Wall Punch, I was able to activate 8 circles in 30 seconds.
