Future of Genetics

At the computer power increases, the ability to utilize that power also increases. Even biology will be affected, particularly in the way genetic information is gathered and stored. In the near future, it is expected that we will be able to obtain all of our genetic make-up at the cost of about $1,000. That information would be used to prescribe medicine and medical care. Also, that information can be used to compare the genes of older and younger people. The genes could be analyzed to determine which parts of the genes start to break down as we get older. When isolated, this information could be used to determine which genes are damaged during the aging process. FERPA Regulations

As a teacher, I have access to certain information about students. It is my responsibility to ensure that the information pertaining to my students is kept confidential and private. If there is a need for a student's information to be shared, the parent or student must be contacted and permission granted. There are a few circumstances in which a student's information is permitted to be shared, but there are still strict regulations on sharing such information. Schools may disclose directory information without consent, but they must give the parents or students a reasonable amount of time to refuse disclosing such information.

Programmable Matter

This technology, although it sounds like science fiction, is actually possible. All matter is made of atoms. Atoms can rearrange themselves. If atoms were replaced by chips, Chips can be very small and the electric charge can be changed which would cause them to bind and reform in different ways. This would result in programmable matter. Although this technology is in its early stages, the possibilities of having matter that changes shapes, even on a larger scale are becoming a reality.
